Silence by Lucy. His mom came every day they'd let her and stayed the maximum amount of time allowed, asking his counselor questions about family sessions, and AJ finally had to tease her by asking how many times she'd watched "28 Days" since he'd checked in. She made a face and thwapped him on the side of the head and even the counselor started to laugh, and it was the first time in a long time that AJ thought that maybe he hadn't fucked his entire life up, because, if nothing else, his mom still loved him.

Brian came to visit twice, on the second weekend and the third, and he was Brian - a combination of a bad stand-up comedian and Billy Graham, goofy and silly and deeply, profoundly spiritual. They talked about God and salvation and life and forgiveness, and AJ cried, and it felt good.
Am I the only one who thinks Chaim Potok's The Chosen is a big, gay love story? Obviously nothing could ever come of it, because of the religious strictures concerning homosexuality, but Danny is so very gay and he and Reuven are so in love. (For anyone who's read The Promise: please don't disillusion me concerning my belief that the two of them are star-crossed lovers. I'm sure they're both very happily and flamboyantly heterosexual in it, but I don't really want to think about it.)
