Name 20 of your CURRENT favorite fictional couples, then tag 5 people to do the same.
In no particular order:
1. Will/Skylar, Good Will Hunting. She's one of the most awesome female characters ever, and their relationship is just...well, what I might want for myself someday, if I had any faith in my ability to make relationships work. It's sweet and funny and irreverant and caring, and they're obviously important to each other but never become subsumed in their couple-dom. Also, they're both really smart and hot, and I like watching them interact for some very shallow reasons on my part.
2. Sirius/Remus, Harry Potter. There's not much I can say about these two that other people haven't said better (or that I haven't said myself a hundred times before). Mostly it's that their lives are so circumscribed, and they have such small windows in which to grasp for happiness. They break my heart, and I love them for it.
3. Richard/Alec, Swordspoint. Hot, sarcastic love between a scholar and a swordsman, who are individually kind of fucked up but still manage to make their relationship work, and who are the greatest loves of each other's lives without being co-dependant asshats about it... Seriously, what's not to adore?
4. Thomas/Jennet, The Lady's Not for Burning. He's impulsive and wounded and generous, and the two of them are witty and intelligent and sensible (for the most part). Another great example of what love is supposed to be.
5. Willow/Tara, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. So, so pretty together. I like them both as individuals--mmm, brilliant, sexy, kind, talented women--and I like them even better as a couple.
6. Edouard/Olivier, The Counterfeiters. In case there was any doubt that I'm something of a sick fuck. But they're romantic in the least cloying way possible, and the miscommunication between them--and its heartrending consequences--twists me up inside.
7. Will/Dorothea, Middlemarch. Oh, my God, yes, I know. But I like Will (Shut up!), and I can empathize with Dorothea, and their relationship makes me feel glowy and happy.
8. Tick/Adam, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Another couple that makes me smile just thinking of them, though with Tick and Adam I'm likely to start snickering midway through the thought.
9. Lucky/Bigman, Lucky Starr. My favorite hero/sidekick duo of all time, and the love they share for each other--obscured as it is by hero-worship on Bigman's side and manly stoicism on Lucky's--is unimaginably sweet and touching.
10. Telemain/Morwen, Enchanted Forest Chronicles. I like intelligent and well-educated couples, and Morwen's one of the neatest characters ever.
11. Danny/Reuven, The Chosen. Um...yeah. Still, you have to admit that they're adorable together. Adolescent love is so freaking sweet.
12. Jim/Doyler, At Swim, Two Boys. Kind of like Danny and Reuven, now that I think on it, only substitute Irish nationalism for Judaism as the major issue (outside their relationship) with which they're struggling.
13. Pyrrhus/Philoctetes, An Arrow's Flight. Oh, my God. The development of their relationship and the personal growth of the two characters is so beautifully and inextricably intertwined. I almost couldn't stand how painfully lovely they were together.
14. Dan/Ford, Comfort and Joy. Picture Sirius and Remus without the shared childhood experiences and without the years of mistrust and separation, and you might have Ford and Dan. They're strong and smart in different ways, and sometimes that pulls them apart, but mostly it's what makes their relationship work so well.
15. Howl/Sophie, Howl's Moving Castle. I love how neither of them acts quite as expected, and how their appreciation for each other is tempered by a real recognition of the other's faults.
16. Fred/George, Harry Potter. (I'd have put Jean/Paul from Gemini, but I haven't finished the book yet, so here's my--possibly secondbest, possibly first--favorite pair of twins.) I've got a bit of a thing for brotherhood, and indeed for sibling relationships in general, and Fred and George exemplify this philia for me. They're so obviously devoted to each other, and they know each other better than anyone else possibly could.
17. John/Rodney, Stargate: Atlantis. Confession: I've not yet seen the show. But, hey, I've read a lot of fanfic! I lose at life. It's all about the snark, really. And the fact that they're each brilliant doesn't hurt.
18. Legolas/Gimli, Lord of the Rings. Enmity giving way to reluctant friendship, which in turn blooms into a deep and abiding partnership... They're just awesome together, from beginning to end.
19. John/Isabella, Emma. And the winner of most obscure favorite couple goes to... Really, though, I love their domesticity, especially their devotion to their children, and their great regard for one another.
20. Arthur/Vincent, In the Absence of Men. A sweet, poignant romance that crosses class boundaries without giving the impression that Vincent is just slumming. This relationship reminds me of Maurice/Alec a bit, except that Vincent's quite a bit more intelligent and that this couple might actually work.
Honorable mentions (all of them based on real people, but these are the particular characterizations I adore):
Siegfried Sassoon/Wilfred Owen, Regeneration.
Alexander/Hephaistion, Fire from Heaven.
Alexander/Bagoas, The Persian Boy.
Hadrian/Antinous, Memoirs of Hadrian.
I'm only going to tag
platoeatssouls explicitly (and don't you do it, either, if you've too much work), but anyone else should feel encouraged to do the meme. I'd certainly be interested in seeing your answers.
