Reading it as gen is totally legitimate. Personally, I think that there's a fair amount of (subconscious) triangulation on Hikaru's part in this story; I mean, he knows what Akira's hands look like and is thinking about them just before he reaches out to grab Touya Kouyo's hand. And given how understanding Touya Kouyo is here, I imagine that he's going to take events perfectly in stride when Hikaru and Akira finally figure things out and announce to their families that they're dating. Anyway, thanks for giving the story a try despite the pairing, and I very much appreciate the comment.
