At the last minute (read: five days before moving), I decided to move to Madison rather than Milwaukee, mostly because it has a hostel that remains open beyond early August and it made my mother happier. So my mother, two of my sisters, the minister's son (he's my sisters' close friend), and I set out in the minivan, courting sleep deprivation on the non-stop drive to Madison...especially since one of my sisters is too young to drive and the minister's son doesn't have a green card yet and hence can't get his license.

They dropped me off at the hostel--which was lovely; very friendly and wonderful people--and set off for Iowa to drop the elder of my sisters at college. And, after walking a million or so miles, I found an apartment. My mother came back up and cosigned the lease the next day, and the minister's son and my sister helped move me into my room.

It's a glorified dorm room, quite literally--the building used to be a UW dorm--so I have a mattress on the floor, a refridgerator, a dresser, and quite a nice walk-in closet. Plus a bathroom down the hall and a kitchen and a laundry room in the basement. Despite these minor irritants--I was very much looking forward to having a kitchen of my own, finally--the room is really lovely: high ceilings, wooden floor, cream walls and purple trim on the windows.

I've gotten a library card already, and now the only hurdle left is finding a job. Oh, and checking that the smoke detector is working. How exactly does one do that?
