I'm in Taiwan! I've been here for just about 18 hours, and a lot of that time was spent sleeping, but here's a quick summary of what I've been doing the rest of the time.
Chinese I've learned: 這個 (zhè gè; this). My brother taught me how to say "thank you" and "excuse me" last night, but I've already forgotten those words. I went out to buy a hairbrush this morning since I forgot to pack one, and the salesgirl talked to me in Chinese and I responded in English for lack of any better options, and it was embarrassing but not too tragic.
Amount of time spent lost and wandering about the hostel in a four-block radius: twenty minutes. I'm still figuring out the naming/numbering system for streets, and there are lots of winding lanes and alleyways that make it more difficult to figure out where you are.
Number of times I've been rained on: three. I've remembered to bring my umbrella every time I've gone out, though, so I only actually got wet one of those times, because I was eating a rapidly melting popsicle and couldn't deal with an umbrella on top of it. (Incidentally, why does Firefox not recognize "popsicle" as a word? What does it want me to call it, an ice lolly?)
Delicious things I've eaten: 1) an onion pancake with soy sauce and chili sauce, 2) watermelon juice, 3) a vegetable noodle dish with homemade noodles, 4) a red bean popsicle
Not-so-delicious things I've eaten: a black plum smoothie (It was salty. Not very strongly so, but enough to taste really strange.)
Number of Super Junior-M songs I've heard: one. A food stand in the night market was playing 我的二分之一 (Full of Happiness). It made everything here feel more familiar and less intimidating. My brother being here helps a lot with that, too. :-)
All in all, it's been a pretty awesome visit so far, and I'm really looking forward to the next few weeks here.
